A Narrow But Clear Win

Lula secured 51.75% of the vote. His rival, right wing politician Flavio Bolsonaro, received 48.25%. Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court added a note to the results stating “””The choice has been mathematically determined.”””

Lula held the lead from the very start of vote counting. Bolsonaro briefly managed to pull ahead at one point during the process.

World Leaders Send Congratulations

Several regional leaders have already congratulated the Brazilian president on his win. Cuba’s Miguel Diaz-Canel, Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum, Uruguay’s Yamandu Orsi and Bolivia’s Rodrigo Paz all sent their regards.

Bolsonaro, meanwhile, has refused to accept the election results. He has stated his intention to seek their annulment. He also objected to the decision to extend voting by two hours.

How the Runoff Unfolded

Brazil held the second round of its presidential vote on Sunday. The contest pitted Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, against incumbent leader Lula da Silva.

A Fourth Term for Lula

Da Silva turns 81 tomorrow. This win marks his fourth time leading Brazil as president. He was born into a large peasant family and began working at a factory at just 14 years old.

He joined a metalworkers union in Sao Paulo state at 23. Twelve years later, he founded the socialist Workers’ Party, the same party he represented in this election.

Lula won the presidency on his fourth attempt and served two terms from 2003 to 2011. He returned for a third term in 2022, defeating Jair Bolsonaro, the father of his current opponent.

Campaign Promises and Priorities

During his campaign, Lula pushed for protecting Brazil’s sovereignty. He also focused on fighting social, racial and gender inequality throughout the country.

On the economic front, he backs greater investment in infrastructure and technology. He also supports building up domestic manufacturing and raising taxes on wealthy citizens.
