Putin Rejects US Sanctions

Russian President Vladimir Putin completely rejected the fresh sanctions placed on two of his country’s largest oil companies. He called these restrictions an effort to pressure Moscow. However, he confirmed that Russia will not yield to any outside coercion. Putin firmly stated, “No self-respecting country does anything under pressure.” His comments followed Washington’s move to impose tough sanctions. The sanctions targeted Russia’s key oil giants, Rosneft and Lukoil. This US action came as a response to Russia’s refusal to agree to an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine.

Sanctions Could Boost Oil Prices

Vladimir Putin claimed he had already warned US President Donald Trump. He suggested the sanctions could destabilize the global energy market and raise oil prices. This increase would also affect the United States itself. He confirmed, “We clearly stated that this would impact global oil prices, including in the US.”

Tension Rises Over Ukraine Conflict

The US and European countries have repeatedly called for a ceasefire from Russia. Conversely, Putin has accused Western nations of attempting to weaken Russia’s sovereignty. Putin argued that the West is using sanctions and military aid to Ukraine to undermine Russia.

Statements from US Treasury and Ukraine

The US Treasury Department said this action was meant to limit Russia’s ability to wage war. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the decision. Zelensky stated it would weaken the Kremlin’s war capabilities. Russia’s Foreign Ministry, however, dismissed the sanctions as completely useless. They claimed the measures would not significantly impact the Russian economy. Following the sanctions, a sharp surge in global oil prices was observed. India, a major energy importer, also began reducing its purchases of Russian crude oil.

Putin on Canceled Trump Meeting

Vladimir Putin also reacted to US President Donald Trump canceling their planned meeting in Budapest. He commented, “It would be a mistake for both of us if we took this meeting lightly and returned without results.” He noted that the meeting had been proposed by the American side. Putin confirmed the meeting has been postponed for now. Still, he emphasized that Moscow is always prepared for dialogue. He concluded, “What can be said? Dialogue is always better than confrontation, even more so than disputes or war. Therefore, we have always been in favor of continuing the talks and remain so today.”
