Thousands of passengers faced major distress on Wednesday. This happened at India’s key airports. IndiGo experienced significant operational disruptions. About 70 flights saw delays. These included flights from Bengaluru and Mumbai. The widespread delays drew massive public criticism.

The carrier struggled to restore on-time operations. Numerous passengers voiced their frustration on social media. They complained about the excessively long delays. They also noted the lack of information from airline personnel.

What Caused the Delays?

Acute staff shortages primarily caused the flight delays. Technical issues also contributed to the problem. Airport congestion was another major factor. Other operational constraints worsened the situation.

IndiGo released an official statement. It acknowledged the widespread service disruptions. The airline blamed the delays on “operational challenges.” These included technology issues and airport congestion. They also mentioned other operational needs.

The airline stated, “We have had several unavoidable flight delays and some cancellations. This happened in the past few days. Various reasons contributed to this. These include technology issues, airport congestion, and operational requirements. Our teams are working diligently. They want to ensure that operations normalise quickly. Furthermore, we are offering alternate flight options or refunds. This is available to affected customers, as applicable.”

Impact on Frustrated Passengers

The disruptions resulted in chaos at major airports. Passengers were left stranded and frustrated for hours. Long waiting queues compounded the issue. Unclear announcements added to the problem. Repeated schedule changes also increased confusion.

Many unhappy passengers turned to social media. They expressed their deep dissatisfaction. They called the delays and cancellations a failure of airline management.

Escalation at Hyderabad Airport

The situation worsened at Hyderabad airport. Passengers were seen arguing loudly with airline staff. This was amid the prolonged waiting times. IndiGo confirmed a major delay. Flight 6E-786 from Mumbai to Hyderabad was delayed. It was pushed back by nearly 10 hours. The airline cited “operational reasons.”

The flight was scheduled for the evening of December 2. It finally left Mumbai the next morning.

A video from the airport circulated widely. It showed a large crowd surrounding the IndiGo helpdesk. This was on Wednesday morning. Passengers were raising their voices. They were waving tickets and phones. They demanded quick and clear answers. Airline employees seemed overwhelmed. They were trying hard to calm the agitated crowd. Angry exchanges continued despite repeated explanations. Travelers sought proper accountability.

IndiGo’s on-time performance (OTP) dropped significantly. It fell to a mere 35 per cent on Tuesday. This was across six major domestic airports. In comparison, Air India recorded 67.2 per cent OTP. Air India Express achieved 79.5 per cent. SpiceJet had 82.50 per cent. Akasa Air saw 73.20 per cent, as per the Civil Aviation Ministry website.
