Three Planets and the Moon Will Parade Together in June

A stunning celestial lineup of Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, and the crescent Moon is set to unfold in mid-June 2026 visible to the naked eye from virtually every part of the globe, with no telescope or special equipment required.

The Night Sky Is About to Put On a Free Show

This June, the universe is offering everyone regardless of where they live a front-row seat to one of 2026’s most talked-about sky events. Three planets and the Moon are lining up in the western sky and you don’t need anything but your eyes to enjoy it.

Around June 12, Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter will form the main three-planet alignment after sunset. Astronomy experts consider this the peak date of what they call a “mini planet parade.” If clouds ruin your view on June 12, don’t give up any clear evening nearby works just as well.

A Week of Sky Magic: Night by Night

The event actually builds beautifully across several evenings giving skywatchers multiple chances to catch the show.

On June 8 and 9, Venus and Jupiter appear especially close only about 1°40′ apart. Both objects will fit together inside the field of view of binoculars. Even without Mercury in the frame, this bright pairing alone is eye-catching right after sunset.

By June 15, Mercury reaches its greatest eastern elongation appearing at its farthest apparent distance from the Sun. This makes mid-June one of the best times of the entire year to spot elusive Mercury with the naked eye.

Then on June 16 and 17, a thin crescent Moon joins the view creating a beautiful Moon-and-planets scene shortly after sunset. Jupiter will be closest to the Moon early on June 17, while Venus makes an even closer approach later the same day. The bright stars Castor and Pollux in the constellation Gemini will also be nearby, adding extra charm to the tableau.

Where in the Sky and When to Look

The key is knowing exactly where to direct your gaze and timing matters.

Look above the western horizon after sunset. On June 8 and 9, Venus and Jupiter will appear just over 1 degree apart roughly the width of a pinky finger held at arm’s length. Mercury will be visible nearby for roughly an hour after the Sun sets.

All four objects Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, and the Moon will line up along the ecliptic. The ecliptic is the Sun’s apparent path across the sky. Think of it as the highway all planets travel and in mid-June, three of them are pulling up alongside each other in the same stretch of road.

Can the Whole World See This?

Absolutely and this is what makes June 2026 genuinely special. This planetary parade is one of the most widely visible sky events of 2026, with Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter aligning in the evening sky for observers across the globe.

Here is a quick guide for global viewers:

Northern Hemisphere Europe, Russia, the United States, Canada, India, China, Japan, and the Middle East will enjoy the best views. The planets sit comfortably higher above the western horizon after sunset, giving more time to observe before they dip below.

Equatorial regions including Southeast Asia, Central Africa, and parts of South America will also see a clear view in the western sky shortly after dark.

Southern Hemisphere Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and southern South America will still catch the event, though the planets will sit lower on the horizon. Moving fast after sunset is key for viewers down south.

Regardless of location the direction is the same. Face west after sunset. Let your eyes adjust for a few minutes. Then look for the brightest object you can spot that’s Venus. Jupiter will be nearby. Mercury, smaller but still visible, completes the trio. And on June 16 and 17, a razor-thin crescent Moon joins them all.

No Telescope? No Problem

One of the most refreshing things about this event is its accessibility. No special equipment is needed the planetary parade is fully visible to the naked eye. A pair of binoculars will simply add extra detail and bring Venus and Jupiter’s closeness into sharper focus but they are far from essential.

Vitaly Frantsev, a lecturer at the Perm Planetarium in Russia, noted that Venus will be shining at 74% illumination during the alignment making it one of the brightest objects in the post-sunset sky. “Astronomical phenomenon worthy of attention: on June 17, Venus, the Moon, Jupiter and Mercury will line up along the ecliptic line in the northwest,” Frantsev said.

Why This Moment Is Worth Stepping Outside

Planet parades where multiple planets cluster visibly in one section of sky are genuinely rare enough to be memorable. Most major multi-planet alignments don’t come around often. The next comparable large-scale event isn’t expected until 2040, when five naked-eye planets will align alongside a crescent Moon.

Mid-June 2026 is a window and it won’t stay open long. The best evenings run from around June 8 all the way through June 17. After that, the planets gradually drift apart and the moment passes.

So wherever you are on Earth set a reminder, find a spot with a clear western horizon, and step outside after sunset. The solar system is putting on a show. And for once, everyone on the planet has a ticket.
