Anthropic Adds Chinese Language Options To Claude Chatbot

Mainland China users still face a block, but experts believe Anthropic is targeting overseas Chinese speakers instead of the mainland market.

Claude Chatbot Gets Chinese Display Options

US artificial intelligence company Anthropic has rolled out Chinese language settings for its Claude chatbot. The update applies only to markets where Claude already operates. Mainland China remains blocked from using the service.

The South China Morning Post checked Claude’s web interface on Thursday. Users can now pick simplified or traditional Chinese as their display language. This gives Chinese speaking users outside the mainland an easier way to use Claude.

China Briefly Listed As Billing Option

During testing, China appeared for a short time as a billing country choice inside Claude’s settings. The option later vanished from the list. It remains unclear why Anthropic added and then removed it.

This brief appearance has fueled speculation about Anthropic’s plans for Chinese speaking users. The company has not explained the change publicly.

UnionPay Spotted At Checkout By Some Users

Several users on X posted screenshots showing UnionPay as a payment method during Claude checkout. UnionPay is China’s leading bank card network. The South China Morning Post could not independently verify if UnionPay payments were actually working.

If accurate, this detail suggests Anthropic is building payment infrastructure familiar to Chinese communities abroad. It does not necessarily signal mainland access.

Overseas Chinese Communities Seen As Likely Target

Industry watchers believe this update is aimed at Chinese speaking users living outside mainland China. Regions like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Macau fall into this category. North American Chinese communities could also benefit from the new language settings.

Analysts do not see this as a step toward entering the mainland Chinese market. Beijing’s regulatory environment and existing restrictions make that unlikely in the near term. Instead, the move appears to be a targeted expansion.

Context Within The Competitive AI Landscape

Anthropic operates in a market shaped by rivals such as OpenAI, Moonshot AI and DeepSeek. Chinese AI firms have grown rapidly and compete heavily on language support. Adding Chinese options helps Claude compete for a broader user base beyond English speakers.

Anthropic is based in San Francisco and continues to expand its global footprint. This language update reflects a broader push to serve diverse user groups. Mainland China access, however, still appears off the table for now.
