HAL’s indigenous Tejas Mark-1A fighter jet completed its maiden flight from Nashik. This technologically capable aircraft has garnered strong interest from many foreign countries. The production of 180 aircraft is targeted for completion by 2032.

The Tejas Mark-1A (Mk-1A) indigenous fighter jet, built by state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), successfully completed its inaugural flight on Friday. This crucial test flight took place at the HAL facility located in Nashik. This achievement signifies another major stride towards self-reliance in India’s defence sector.
HAL’s Chairman and Managing Director, D.K. Sunil, stated the Tejas Mark-1A is a fully indigenous, state-of-the-art fighter aircraft. He mentioned that many foreign nations have shown deep interest in purchasing the plane. This is due to its impressive technical capability and overall performance.
What HAL’s Chairman Stated
D.K. Sunil confirmed, “We now have an aircraft capable in every aspect.” He highlighted its state-of-the-art radar system and robust weapon capacity. The aircraft also features modern avionics. “It is not only a modern fighter jet,” he added, “but its maintenance and upgrade can also be managed in India.” This is possible because HAL has full control over both its software and hardware.
The HAL chief compared the Tejas Mark-1A to the older MiG-21 Bison aircraft. He stated that this new plane represents a generational leap in India’s defence technology.
He further explained, “The Tejas Mark-1A is nearly a 4.5 generation aircraft.” It includes the advanced AESA radar and an Electronic Warfare (EW) suite. An upgraded missile system is also part of its features. “The MiG-21 was highly capable in its era,” he admitted. However, Tejas is much more advanced and multi-role for modern requirements.
Global Interest in Tejas Mk-1A
Mr. Sunil revealed that several countries have shown initial interest in the Tejas. He confirmed, “We are currently holding discussions with various nations.” The response received in this early phase is very encouraging, he shared. Foreign buyers view it as a highly capable and trustworthy aircraft. “We are also demonstrating what new capabilities India can integrate into this aircraft,” he added.
According to the HAL chief, the company has been assigned the task of producing 180 Tejas Mark-1A aircraft in total. The target is to complete this production by the financial year 2032-33. Following this completion, HAL plans to begin the production of the LCA Mark-2 (Tejas Mk-2).
He remarked, “We expect Tejas Mark-1A production to be finished by 2032-33.” At the same time, he anticipates the manufacturing of the LCA Mark-2 will start. This next version will be even more advanced and powerful.
Key Features of the Tejas Mark-1A
The Tejas Mark-1A is a light combat aircraft with an indigenous and advanced design. It is an advanced version of the LCA developed in India. The aircraft is considered a fourth-generation multi-role fighter. This fast, manoeuvrable, and highly accurate aircraft can operate day and night in all weather conditions.
It can carry an armed payload of over 5.5 tons. The jet can also accurately strike multiple targets simultaneously. The Tejas Mark-1A boasts new AESA radar and Beyond-Visual-Range (BVR) missiles. It also features an advanced Electronic Warfare (EW) suite and air-to-air refueling. Since it is manufactured domestically, changes can be incorporated within the country as needed.
