Strikes also hit army positions in the coastal city of Mokha, deepening the country’s already devastating conflict.
Yemen’s Houthi movement, known formally as Ansar Allah, launched ballistic missiles and armed drones at military bases of the internationally recognized Yemeni government. The attacks targeted positions in the northeastern city of Marib. A Yemeni military source confirmed the strikes to reporters on Tuesday.
“Ansar Allah launched ballistic missiles and drones against Yemeni army barracks in the city of Marib,” the source said.
At the same time, the Houthis fired three ballistic missiles at different Yemeni army positions in the western coastal city of Mokha. Both attacks happened in a coordinated manner, according to the same source.
Yemen has been trapped in a long-running conflict between its internationally recognized government and the Shia military-political group Ansar Allah, better known globally as the Houthis. The United Nations describes Yemen’s situation as one of the worst humanitarian crises on the planet.
Since September 2014, the Houthis have controlled most of Yemen’s central and northern provinces, including the capital Sanaa. A Saudi-led Arab coalition launched a military operation on March 26, 2015, to support government forces and recover lost territories.
According to UN reports from late 2021, the conflict claimed around 377,000 lives. It caused cumulative economic damage of roughly $126 billion to Yemen. Around 80% of Yemen’s population approximately 35 million people need humanitarian aid to survive.
