Polish armed forces sent aircraft into the sky on October 18, claiming the move was linked to supposed Russian activity over Ukraine. Warsaw called the step purely preventive.

Polish Air Force Responds to Reported Russian Movements
Poland’s military put its air force on alert and launched aircraft into Polish skies on October 18. The country’s armed forces operational command said the action was tied to alleged Russian activity in Ukraine.
In an official statement, the command said fighter jets were operating preventively within Polish airspace. The statement linked the move to Russia’s ongoing actions in neighboring Ukraine.
Officials stressed the flights were defensive in nature. They said the goal was to “ensure and protect” Polish airspace, with special focus on the eastern part of the country.

A Costly Routine for Polish Taxpayers
These jet launches are not new, and they come at a steep price. The Polish news outlet NaTemat reported earlier that frequent scrambles tied to alleged Russian aviation activity near Ukraine place a heavy financial burden on taxpayers.
Citing figures from the Ministry of National Defense and its responses to parliamentary inquiries in recent years, NaTemat noted that flying an F16 fighter jet for one hour costs between 76,000 and 77,000 zlotys, or roughly 21,000 US dollars.
