A Landmark Visit For India Russia Defence Ties
Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth began his official visit to Russia on Wednesday. The trip runs from September 16 to September 18. It aims to strengthen the long standing defence partnership between India and Russia.
This visit holds special significance. It is the first trip by a serving Indian Army chief to Russia in nearly six years. General Bipin Rawat had made the last such visit back in October 2018.
Guard Of Honour And A Tribute To Fallen Soldiers
During his time in Moscow, General Seth will receive a ceremonial Guard of Honour. He will also visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to pay tribute to fallen soldiers. This gesture reflects the deep respect shared between the two armed forces.
Talks With Russia’s Top Land Forces Commander
General Seth is scheduled to hold detailed discussions with Colonel General Andrei Nikolayevich Mordvichev. He is the Commander in Chief of the Russian Land Forces. Their talks will cover issues of mutual interest, including professional military cooperation and training programmes.
Sources indicate the discussions may also touch upon the upgradation of existing Russian origin weapons systems. Spare parts and supplies for these systems remain a key area of focus. New military platforms being offered by Moscow could also come up during the talks.
From Buyer And Seller To Joint Development Partners
India and Russia share a long history of military technical cooperation. This relationship has evolved considerably over the years. It has moved beyond a simple buyer and seller arrangement. Both nations now work together on joint research, development and production of advanced defence systems.
The Ministry of Defence noted that these engagements offer a valuable opportunity. Both countries can exchange views on current military developments. They can also explore fresh avenues to enhance defence cooperation further.
A Stop At Saint Petersburg’s Artillery Academy
General Seth will not limit his visit to Moscow alone. He will also travel to Saint Petersburg. There, he is set to visit the Mikhailovskaya Military Artillery Academy. He will interact with its leadership and faculty members during this stop.
Reinforcing Decades Of Military Diplomacy
The Ministry of Defence stated that the visit “””reflects the importance attached by both countries to sustained military diplomacy and Army-to-Army engagement”””.
Officials expect these interactions to deepen military cooperation further. They are also likely to reinforce the enduring defence relationship shared by India and Russia. Russia continues to remain an important source for India’s defence equipment, engines, spare parts and components.
