PM Modi highlighted Russia’s role as partner country at UP trade show, calling it a sign of India’s enduring relationship with Moscow.

In the midst of ongoing trade discussions with the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the strategic importance of India’s relationship with Russia on Thursday. Despite US concerns over India’s oil dealings with Moscow, the Prime Minister stressed that India is “strengthening the time-tested partnership” with Russia.
Speaking at the UP International Trade Show (UPITS) 2025 in Greater Noida, where Russia is the international partner, PM Modi highlighted India’s self-reliance drive, stating that AK-203 rifle production will soon begin “from a factory set up with Russia’s help.”
“A nation like India should not rely on others,” PM Modi remarked. His comments follow recent tensions between India and the US after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on certain Indian imports. These duties, half of which target India’s oil trade with Russia, have sparked debate in bilateral trade relations.
“The country must become self-reliant; every product that can be made in India should be produced here,” PM Modi asserted. He added, “The production of AK-203 rifles will soon start with Russian support. Uttar Pradesh will host a new defence corridor, and production of weapons like BrahMos missiles is already underway.”
Russia is participating in the third edition of the UP trade show as the partner country. PM Modi noted that Russia’s involvement signals that India is actively “strengthening the time-tested partnership” through platforms like UPITS 2025, which runs in Greater Noida until September 29.
The India-Russia friendship has always enjoyed strong personal rapport, with PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin showcasing it during the SCO Summit in Tianjing, China. The leaders exchanged a warm hug and shared a car ride to their bilateral meeting, publicly praising the enduring India-Russia relationship.
