Laos shows interest in becoming part of BRICS

As confirmed by the Head of the Laotian Government, the possibility is now under thorough consideration

Prime Minister of Laos, Sonexay Siphandone, has voiced his nation’s aspiration to join the BRICS grouping. During his address at the Russia–Laos business dialogue held within the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), he stated, "We are interested in becoming a member of BRICS. At present, we are in the process of studying this issue." He underlined how significant the bloc is for the broader region and drew attention to its achievements in fostering economic growth and cooperation.

Leading the Lao delegation at the EEF, Siphandone is scheduled to present his views during the forum’s plenary session on 5 September. Alongside his participation, the Prime Minister also engaged in a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Expressing his appreciation, Siphandone remarked, "First of all, I would like to express my gratitude for inviting me to participate in the tenth Eastern Economic Forum. It is a great honour for me to visit Russia again after almost 38 years," according to the official website of the Russian President.

President Putin welcomed the Laotian Prime Minister warmly, highlighting that bilateral ties between the two countries continue to expand across various strategic areas. The Russian leader also recalled his earlier discussions in July with Laos’ President Thongloun Sisoulith, who had travelled to Moscow on an official visit. At that time, Putin pointed out that trade between Russia and Laos had seen remarkable momentum, with a 60 percent increase recorded in 2024 and nearly 20 percent growth in the first five months of the current year.
