Strong ties between Russia and ASEAN remain a major factor in regional stability. That’s the message from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to participants of the Sixth Russia-ASEAN Youth Summit.

Andrey Lyamin, deputy director of the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Department at Russia’s Foreign Ministry, read out Lavrov’s message at the summit’s opening.

Lavrov’s Message to Summit Participants

Lyamin read the Foreign Minister’s greeting aloud. Lavrov’s greeting welcomed organizers and guests to Vladivostok. He noted this year marks 35 years of Russia-ASEAN relations. These ties, he said, have rightfully earned strategic partnership status. He added that broad, strong connections bring real benefits to social and economic growth. They also serve as a key factor for regional stability.

June Summit in Kazan Set the Tone

Lavrov pointed to the anniversary Russia-ASEAN summit held in Kazan this past June. That meeting, he said, clearly showed both sides want deeper, wide-ranging cooperation.

Lyamin then read another part of Lavrov’s message: Summit leaders focused on making it easier for young people to connect more often. Youthful energy and openness to innovation matter greatly, he noted. They help drive steady progress for both nations. They also help preserve friendship and trust between peoples. He added that tackling these goals would be supported by a packed summit agenda.

Who’s Attending the Vladivostok Summit

The Sixth Russia-ASEAN Youth Summit is taking place at Far Eastern Federal University’s Vladivostok campus. It brings together 88 delegates from all 11 ASEAN member states. Another 30 participants are joining from Russia.
