Students Join Lula da Silva Rally in Central Rio
Students and schoolchildren marched through central Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, joining a large Lula da Silva rally. They gathered to show support for Brazil’s sitting president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The National Student Union organized the march. Most participants were school pupils and students from state universities.
Fears Over Education Cuts Drive the Protest
Many signs and banners at the rally reflected one major concern. Protesters fear that rival candidate Flávio Bolsonaro could cut education funding if elected. Scholarship programs could also face cuts under his presidency, demonstrators warned.
Pro Lula da Silva Marches Spread Across Brazil
Rio de Janeiro was not alone in hosting a Lula da Silva rally this week. Similar demonstrations took place in Belém do Pará, Salvador, Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre.
Brazil Heads Toward a Runoff on October 25
Brazil held the first round of its presidential election on October 4. Lula da Silva and right wing rival Bolsonaro both advanced to the second round. The runoff vote is set for October 25.
