Russian Oil Tanker Makes Unexpected U-Turn

A tanker carrying Russian crude oil suddenly changed its direction. It was heading toward India. The vessel is now adrift in the Baltic Sea. This happened after the US sanctioned Rosneft and Lukoil. Bloomberg reported this unusual incident on Wednesday.

Sanctions Cause Major Export Disruption

This unexpected move highlights a major disruption. Russian oil exports are currently facing challenges. New US restrictions caused this significant change. Indian refiners have now suspended their crude purchases.

Details of the Furia Tanker Cargo

The tanker is named the ‘Furia’. It loaded around 730,000 barrels of crude. The oil was sourced from Rosneft. Loading happened at Primorsk port on October 20. The Furia was destined for Sikka in Gujarat. This state has refineries run by Reliance Industries and Bharat Petroleum. Data came from Kpler and Vortexa.

Expected Arrival Postponed Indefinitely

The ship had an expected arrival date. It was initially planned for mid-November.

Mid-Sea Reversal Maneuver

The Furia was sailing between Germany and Denmark on Tuesday. It suddenly reversed its established course. The ship sharply reduced its speed. It then came to a complete stop, Bloomberg noted.

Indian Refiners Suspend Russian Crude Imports

Indian refiners immediately halted their Russian crude imports. This followed the announcement of US sanctions. All transactions with Rosneft and Lukoil must end by November 21.

Reliance Industries Compliance Confirmed

Reliance is the biggest Indian buyer of Russian oil. They confirmed their compliance with the sanctions.

State-Run Firms Also Wind Down Shipments

State-run refiners also started stopping their shipments. Ownership usually transfers to the buyer upon unloading. This occurs at the destination port.

New Strategies for Oil Procurement

Reliance recently increased its orders for Middle Eastern crude. Russian oil suppliers must find new buyers. They may also wait for new payment and shipping routes.

The Furia Tanker Blacklisted

The Furia vessel itself has also been blacklisted. Both the European Union and Britain included it on their lists. This was confirmed by Bloomberg.
