Drone Strike on Moscow-Simferopol Train Kills Driver, Halts Crimea Rail Network

A Ukrainian drone hit a passenger train locomotive in annexed Crimea on Monday killing a crew member and forcing authorities to shut down multiple rail routes. Separately, two tractor drivers lost their lives in Russia’s Kursk region after a drone attack in an open field.

Drone Hits Passenger Train in Crimea, Killing One

A drone struck a passenger train traveling from Moscow to Simferopol on Monday killing an assistant driver and wounding the lead driver. Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-appointed governor of Crimea, confirmed the incident. He stated that no passengers suffered any injuries during the attack. Authorities quickly arranged buses to carry stranded passengers to their final destinations.

Aksyonov did not reveal the exact location where the drone hit the train. The attack caused immediate disruption across the peninsula’s rail network leaving thousands of travelers scrambling for alternate transport options.

Multiple Rail Routes Around Simferopol Shut Down

The Southern Suburban Passenger Company which manages rail operations across Crimea later announced a suspension of services on several routes to and from Simferopol, the peninsula’s second-largest city. The announcement confirmed what many passengers feared a major breakdown in one of the region’s key transport links.

Local media reported that the only rail connection still linking Crimea to the Russian mainland now runs through the Kerch bridge. However, even that route faces disruption with passengers currently being moved to the bridge crossing by bus instead of by train.

Two Farm Workers Killed in Kursk Region Drone Strike

In a separate incident on Sunday, two tractor drivers lost their lives while working in a field in the village of 1-E Panino located roughly 80 kilometers from the border with Ukraine’s Sumy region. Kursk region Governor Alexander Khinshtein confirmed their deaths. He did not provide additional details about the exact circumstances of the attack.

The village sits deep in Russia’s border zone a stretch of land that has seen repeated drone strikes throughout the ongoing conflict.

Russia Claims Downing of 310 Drones Overnight

Between Sunday night and early Monday morning, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced it had intercepted 310 Ukrainian drones targeting locations across Russia and annexed Crimea. The scale of the overnight drone campaign underlined how intensified the aerial warfare has become along both sides of the conflict.
