Ukrainian Drone Tears Into Luxury Moscow High-Rise Just Days Before Victory Day Parade

A Ukrainian drone punched a hole through one of Moscow’s prominent luxury residential towers early Monday exposing just how fragile the Russian capital’s air defenses really are.

Drone Breaks Through Moscow’s Air Shield

A Ukrainian drone smashed into a tall residential building close to central Moscow on Monday morning a startling breach of the Russian capital’s air defenses. This happened despite heavy security measures and tightened internet restrictions that authorities had put in place to stop exactly this kind of attack.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the strike but stressed that nobody was hurt. The drone came down in a southwestern district of the city just across from the iconic Mosfilm studio, one of Russia’s most historic film production facilities.

Luxury Tower Bears the Damage

Images circulating through local media showed a jagged, deep gash torn into the side of the high-rise. Video footage filmed from inside one of the damaged apartments showed firefighters carefully moving through rooms floors and walls buried under chunks of debris. The building was identified as the Dom na Mosfilmovskoy a well-known and upscale residential complex in the city.

Sobyanin confirmed that a total of five drones had targeted Moscow between late Sunday night and early Monday morning. Russia’s Defense Ministry, meanwhile, announced in a briefing that it had intercepted 117 Ukrainian drones across the country overnight including those approaching the greater Moscow region.

Timing Sends a Sharp Message Days Before Victory Day

The drone attack lands at a deeply symbolic moment. Russia’s annual Victory Day military parade on Red Square falls on May 9 just days away. Russian authorities have already confirmed that this year’s parade will not feature any military vehicles for the first time in nearly two decades. The Kremlin cited rising security concerns linked directly to the escalating wave of Ukrainian drone strikes as the reason behind that decision.

President Vladimir Putin has put forward a proposal to observe a ceasefire with Ukraine on May 9. Whether Kyiv will agree to the terms, however, remains an open question.

Also on Monday adding to the day’s grim toll a Russian missile strike hit a town in eastern Ukraine, killing at least four people and wounding 18 others.
