Merchandise exports touched $43.81 billion last month, outpacing import growth and pulling the trade deficit down to a five month low of $26.86 billion.

Exports Post Sharpest Rise In Years
India’s trade deficit narrowed sharply in August. Government data showed exports grew much faster than imports during the month. The Department of Commerce released these numbers on Tuesday. Merchandise exports rose 26 percent year on year. They touched $43.81 billion in August alone. This is one of the strongest monthly export readings in recent years. Imports also rose, but at a much slower pace. Inbound shipments increased 14 percent year on year to $70.67 billion. Because exports grew faster than imports, the trade gap shrank noticeably.
Deficit Falls To A Five Month Low
India’s trade deficit stood at $26.86 billion in August. A year earlier, the gap was wider at $27.22 billion. The improvement looks even sharper against July’s numbers. Last month’s deficit was $31.98 billion, the widest in months. August’s reading marks the narrowest trade gap in five months. Officials linked the trend to strong global demand for Indian goods. A steep drop in gold imports also helped narrow the gap. Gold purchases from abroad fell 57.7 percent to just $2.3 billion in August.
Engineering, Petroleum And Chemicals Lead The Push
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal spoke about the drivers behind the export surge. He said “””Export growth was driven by engineering goods, petroleum products, chemicals and textiles, with the major demand coming from the US, EU, and BRICS economies.”””
These four sectors accounted for a large share of August’s export gains. Engineering goods remain one of India’s largest export categories. Petroleum products also added significantly to the overall numbers. Textile shipments picked up pace after a slower patch earlier in the year. Demand came strongly from three major markets. The United States, the European Union and BRICS nations led that demand.
Five Month Trend Shows Steady Momentum
The improvement is not limited to August alone. Cumulative exports for April to August touched $215.91 billion this year. That marks nearly 18 percent growth over the same period last year. Imports during these five months also rose by a similar margin. Total imports reached $363 billion, up roughly 18 percent year on year. Both exports and imports are climbing together this year. However, exports have started to close the gap with imports. Analysts see this trend as a positive signal for India’s trade balance heading into the coming months.
