Two years ago, Infosys founder Narayan Murthy made a comment about Indian work hours. That statement drew significant criticism at the time. He had advocated that Indians should work 70 hours per week. This was necessary to contribute to the nation’s progress. Now, he has again supported his previous stance. He offered the example of neighboring China to justify his position.

In a recent interview, he referenced China’s ‘9-9-6 model’ work culture. He suggested that young people need to work longer hours. This long work week is required to accelerate India’s growth momentum.

What is China’s 9-9-6 Model?

The ‘9-9-6 work rule’ has been quite common in many Chinese tech companies. Under this rule, employees are expected to work from 9 AM to 9 PM. They must work six days a week, totaling 72 working hours weekly. This model gained considerable popularity in firms like Alibaba and Huawei.

However, the model faced strong backlash. The criticism stemmed from a lack of work-life balance and increased stress. Later, in 2021, the Chinese Supreme Court declared the 9-9-6 model illegal. Nevertheless, reports indicate it is still followed in many places today.

Murthy’s Past Criticism

During a discussion with a private TV channel, Mr. Murthy shared his views. He mentioned India’s economic growth rate is 6.5 percent. While this rate is decent, he pointed out a major difference. China’s economy is approximately six times the size of India’s. Therefore, active participation from all sections of society is essential.

He further emphasized that young professionals should focus on their careers first. They should worry about work-life balance later. Earlier in 2023, he also advocated for the 70-hour work week. He claimed it was crucial for nation-building. Now, he has reiterated that same statement. He used China as a prime example this time.
