Tom Cruise’s legendary naval aviator Maverick returns to the big screen and this time, he’s bringing company. Paramount Pictures is giving Indian moviegoers a rare double-feature theatrical event to mark four decades of Top Gun.

Four Decades, One Legendary Franchise
There are films that entertain. Then there are films that define a generation. Top Gun belongs firmly in the second category. Released in 1986, Tony Scott’s high-flying action drama did not just give the world Tom Cruise in aviator sunglasses it rewrote the rules of Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking. Now, forty years later, Paramount Pictures wants Indian audiences to feel that rush all over again.
Starting May 15, both Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022) will screen across Indian theatres for one week only. It is a limited theatrical run, which means this is genuinely a now-or-never moment for fans who missed either film on the big screen.
What Made the Original a Cultural Landmark
The 1986 original was directed by Tony Scott and starred Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell a hotshot Navy pilot who pushes every boundary, personal and professional, at the elite Fighter Weapons School. The supporting cast included Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan, and Tom Skerritt.
The film was more than a box office hit. It became a cultural phenomenon boosting US Navy recruitment numbers, making aviator jackets fashionable again, and cementing Cruise as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Its soundtrack, its iconic moments, and its sheer visual energy made it unforgettable.
Maverick Proved the Magic Was Still There
When Top Gun: Maverick finally released in 2022 after years of delays, expectations were sky-high and the film somehow exceeded them. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the sequel brought Cruise back as Maverick, now tasked with training a younger generation of elite pilots for a near-impossible mission.
The film also featured Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. Val Kilmer returned in a deeply emotional cameo.
Top Gun: Maverick earned over $1.5 billion worldwide. It became the highest-grossing film in Paramount Pictures’ history. It earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture an extraordinary achievement for an action sequel. It was the number one film globally in 2022.
Why This Double-Feature Event Matters
Re-releases are no longer rare in Indian cinema. RRR, The Dark Knight, and Interstellar have all returned to theatres in recent years and found enthusiastic audiences. But a back-to-back theatrical event pairing an original film with its billion-dollar sequel is a different beast altogether.
For younger viewers, this is a first-time chance to see the 1986 classic on the big screen. For longtime fans, watching both films together in sequence is a fresh emotional experience. The contrast between the two films one rooted in 80s bravado, the other layered with maturity and loss is far more powerful when watched back-to-back.
Top Gun 3 Is Already Happening
The timing of this re-release is no coincidence. Paramount Pictures recently confirmed at CinemaCon that Top Gun 3 is officially in development. Screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Maverick, is returning to pen the third chapter. Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Maverick once again.
This double re-release serves as both a celebration and a warm-up keeping the franchise alive in public consciousness ahead of what will likely be one of the most anticipated films of the decade.
Cruise Himself Made the Announcement
Tom Cruise announced the global re-release personally on his social media platforms. “If you feel the need… Two films. One big screen. Back in theaters, May 13th, for one week only,” he posted alongside a new trailer. That post alone generated enormous buzz worldwide.
India’s window opens slightly later, from May 15, giving the country its own exclusive week-long window to see both films in theatres.
