UGC recently issued a public notice against another fake university. This Delhi-based engineering college was falsely enrolling students by claiming to be legitimate.

UGC official notice warning students against fake university fraud
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has alerted students about 22 fake educational institutions across India.

Education is crucial in today’s world. An educated person can live independently and without relying on anyone. For this, students seek admission for higher studies in various universities and colleges. But what if you discover one day that your university is a fake?

UGC Tightens Grip on Unrecognized Institutions

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has again cracked down on an unrecognized engineering college. This institution falsely claimed to be legitimate. The Institute of Management and Engineering was found to be fake after an investigation. The UGC issued a public notice, specifically alerting students about this institute.

Many Fake Colleges Busted by UGC

The UGC also identified and released a list of 22 fake educational institutions. These are operating as recognized universities in select states. Most of these are generating revenue in educational hubs like Delhi and UP. Out of the 22 universities, nine are located in Delhi. This number is quite significant. Delhi is the capital, and these institutes use grand terms like National, Institute of Technology, and Management. Such terms in their brand promotion trap students into their network.

Major Cities Harbour More Fake Educational Institutions

Several big reasons explain the prevalence of fake institutions in large cities. The foremost is anonymity due to sheer numbers. It is extremely difficult to distinguish between real and fake institutions, from engineering to medical fields. Also, students constantly arrive here throughout the year. The admission queue never ends. The situation in UP is even worse. Here, fake universities only need to add ‘Vidyapeeth,’ ‘Parishad,’ or ‘Open University’ to their names to make money. This business thrives by offering easy admission and a degree in name only to students.

Avoid Falling into the Fake University Trap

Our carelessness is the biggest reason these fake universities continue to operate. Parents and students often blindly trust the university’s brochure during admission. They take admission without proper verification. To protect students from these fake institutions, the UGC has released a list. This list includes all recognized and unrecognized universities. You can easily check it on the official UGC portal. Furthermore, you must verify the university’s credentials on Digilocker or NAD before taking admission.
