Seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, including Raghav Chadha, joined BJP on Friday leaving the party with only three members in the upper house. AAP is now filing a petition at the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, seeking legal counsel, and preparing to approach court if needed.

AAP Moves Against Rebel MPs, Petitions Rajya Sabha Secretariat
Aam Aadmi Party has taken a decisive step against its seven rebel Rajya Sabha MPs. The party is filing a petition at the Rajya Sabha Secretariat by Friday evening. According to AAP, MPs like Raghav Chadha and others cannot legally merge the party into BJP. The party firmly believes their memberships must be cancelled immediately. AAP is actively consulting legal experts on the matter. The party has made it clear it will approach court if the situation demands it.
The seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs who crossed the floor and joined BJP on Friday are Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Swati Maliwal, and Vikramjit Sahni. With this mass defection, AAP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha has dropped to just three members. Seven of the ten AAP Rajya Sabha MPs were from Punjab, and three were from Delhi.
Will Remaining AAP Members Also Face Disqualification?
Now a big question arises what happens to AAP in Rajya Sabha? Will the remaining three AAP members also face disqualification? Political analysts say it is very difficult to predict right now. Similar situations have occurred in the past. When Venkaiah Naidu was the Chairperson, TDP’s C.M. Ramesh merged his party into BJP along with two-thirds of the party’s members. The Chairperson at that time approved the merger, and no members faced disqualification.
What Did Arvind Kejriwal Say?
AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal responded to Raghav Chadha’s big announcement with just a single line. The former Chief Minister of Delhi posted on social media platform X, saying “BJP has once again betrayed the people of Punjab.”
On his part, Raghav Chadha had stated: “The AAP to which I gave 15 years of my life has now moved away from honest politics. I am a right man in the wrong party. By moving away from it, I am getting closer to the people. Today’s AAP is corrupt and compromised.”
