Official Police Findings
Zanzibar authorities recently confirmed the cause of death for Ashlee Jenae. She was a 31-year-old lifestyle influencer from Miami. She was discovered in a Tanzania hotel room days after getting engaged. Benedict Mapujira, the North Unguja Regional Police Commander, shared the details. He stated that Ashlee allegedly died by hanging on April 9. This incident occurred at the Zuri Zanzibar resort.
Details of the Hotel Dispute
Reports from The Citizen indicate that hotel staff intervened earlier that day. Ashlee and her fiancé, Joe McCann, had a heated dispute. Consequently, the couple moved into separate rooms. Resort employees became concerned about Ashlee’s mental state. They contacted the local authorities after fearing she might harm herself.
The Official Statement
“The fiancé, as it was reported, had disagreements, and later hotel management decided to separate their rooms, so the woman had her own room, and the man had his own room,” Mapujira said. Police noted that Robinson was still alive when they arrived. She was rushed to a hospital but died the following day.
Events Leading to the Tragedy
Zuberi Chembera, a Deputy Commissioner in Zanzibar, shared more context. A guest in room 24 reported a loud argument in room 25. That was the room Joe and Ashlee shared. Management then moved Joe to room 65 to de-escalate. This room was an eight-minute walk away. Ashlee later asked a hotel staffer for a charging cable. When the employee returned ten minutes later, he found her hanging.
Family and Friends Reject Claims
Ashlee’s inner circle has flatly rejected the suicide ruling. Her friend Savannah Britt voiced her concerns on X. “We need justice for my friend Ashlee Jenae who was found dead in her hotel in Tanzania and her fiance Joe McCann claims she hung herself. Anyone who knows Ash knows she would NEVER commit suicide. We need answers now!” her post read. Her family also expressed deep sorrow. They stated that “one moment she was celebrating love and life in true Ashly fashion, and the next, she was gone.”
Investigation into the Fiancé
Police in Zanzibar are currently questioning Joe McCann. His passport has been withheld by the local authorities. He is officially cooperating as a witness in the case.
