Gallstones were once considered an adult health issue, but now doctors are witnessing a rapid rise in this problem among children. Experts warn that timely diagnosis and lifestyle changes are essential for children’s health.

Gallstones in the gallbladder were earlier believed to be a health issue linked only with aging, but that assumption is now changing. Recent findings highlight that this problem is increasingly affecting children. Hospitals and clinics across the country are reporting several such cases, raising concerns among pediatric specialists. A study conducted by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) examined children admitted with abdominal pain in recent years. The research revealed that nearly one in every 200 children was diagnosed with gallstones in the gallbladder.
Doctors point out that dietary habits and lifestyle patterns in urban areas are playing a significant role in this rise. Frequent consumption of fast food and sugary products is leading to higher cholesterol and fat levels in children, which directly increases the risk of gallstone formation. Obesity is another major contributing factor. Health experts strongly emphasize the need to monitor children closely, warning that neglecting this issue could turn it into a serious health challenge.
Gallstones Detected in Children as Young as Six
Dr. Sandeep Kumar Sinha, Director of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology at Medanta-The Medicity, Gurugram, shared his concern that gallstones are now being found in children as young as six years old. He explained that many cases remain undetected for a long time, as children often show no visible symptoms. Parents usually dismiss frequent stomach pain as a common problem, but continuous abdominal pain could be an indicator of gallstones. In such situations, doctors advise undergoing an ultrasound to ensure the right treatment begins on time.
Expert Warning on Early Gallstone Formation
Dr. Raman Kumar, Chairman of the Academy of Family Physicians of India, stated, “Gallstone formation in children can become a serious health problem. The presence of stones at such a young age is not a good sign, and preventive measures are essential.” He further explained that in many cases, medication and dietary modifications can help manage the condition, but if the gallbladder develops inflammation, surgery becomes necessary
Symptoms of Gallstones in Children
Children with gallstones may show these common symptoms:
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Digestive problems
In children who show no symptoms, gallstones are often detected accidentally during ultrasound tests done for other reasons.
Preventive Measures Parents Should Take
Doctors recommend several preventive steps to reduce the risk of gallstones in children:
- Encourage children to eat more fruits and vegetables.
- Minimize or completely avoid junk food.
- Reduce children’s screen time.
- Engage them in physical activities daily.
- Never ignore symptoms like abdominal pain or digestive problems.
- Consult a doctor promptly if any signs appear.
