Cyclone Ditwah is rapidly moving towards the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. The IMD has issued a red alert. There is a high risk of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding in several districts.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a new alert. It confirmed that Cyclone Ditwah is now headed towards the North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. This storm is strengthening fast in the southwest Bay of Bengal. It could create a serious situation in both states. The IMD stated the system is near Sri Lanka right now. It is moving forward very quickly.
IMD Director-General, Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, gave an update. He said the cyclone would cross over Sri Lanka between Friday night (November 28, 2025) and Saturday morning (November 29, 2025). Afterward, it could become even more powerful over the Southwest Bay of Bengal. Because of this, coastal areas of India are on high alert. The storm is expected to reach the Tamil Nadu coast by the night of November 29. Cyclone Ditwah will pass near Puducherry, Cuddalore, and Chennai by the morning of November 30. It will move past the Andhra coast on the night of November 30. The storm is forecast to weaken on December 1.

Tamil Nadu on High Alert
The Tamil Nadu government declared a Red Alert in coastal districts. This was done after the storm changed its direction. The districts of Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, and Puducherry face a risk of very heavy rainfall and strong winds. The IMD predicts wind speeds could reach 70 to 90 km/h. These strong winds are very dangerous for trees, power lines, and weak houses.
Expect Heavy Damage with Strong Winds
The high winds could damage tin sheds, hoardings, and temporary buildings. This storm is likely to severely impact standing crops, vegetables, and flowers in farm fields. Many areas also face the threat of power supply disruption.
Risk of Waterlogging and Flooding in Cities
Continuous rain increases the chance of water accumulation in urban areas of the coastal districts. Low-lying neighborhoods may experience flooding. Traffic could be blocked on many roads. The IMD also warned about the danger of flash floods in hilly regions.
Warnings for Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana Too
Kerala may see light to moderate rain in many places. Some parts might even get heavy showers. Andhra Pradesh’s Yanam and Rayalaseema are predicted to have very heavy rainfall. Rain in many Telangana areas could intensify on Sunday. Authorities have advised preparing for this situation.
When Will the Rain Decrease?
The IMD expects the rainfall intensity to slowly drop as the cyclone moves ahead. However, the weather in parts of South India is not expected to normalize completely until December 1. Heavy rain may continue in some locations.
