Hyderabad MP and president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Asaduddin Owaisi, on Saturday announced that his party will support the INDIA bloc’s Vice Presidential candidate B Sudershan Reddy.

Owaisi stated that he was approached by the Telangana Chief Minister’s Office with a request to extend backing to the former Supreme Court judge, who will be contesting against NDA’s nominee and current Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan in the September 9 election.

“@TelanganaCMO spoke to me today and requested that we support Justice Sudershan Reddy as Vice President. @aimim_national will extend its support to Justice Reddy, a fellow Hyderabadi and a respected jurist. I also spoke to Justice Reddy and expressed our best wishes to him,” Owaisi shared on X.

The INDIA bloc had declared its Vice Presidential nominee on August 19, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge describing the decision as an “ideological battle.” He emphasized that Reddy embodies the principles and values rooted in India’s freedom movement.

“Today, these values are under assault, and this is the reason that the Opposition decided to contest this ideological battle unitedly,” Kharge remarked.

Reddy began his career as a lawyer in Andhra Pradesh before going on to serve as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. In January 2007, he was elevated to the Supreme Court, where he served until his retirement in July 2011. Meanwhile, on August 12, BJP chief JP Nadda announced Maharashtra Governor Radhakrishnan as the NDA’s candidate for the Vice Presidential race.

This election comes in the wake of Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation from the Vice President’s office, which he attributed to medical reasons. The Vice President of India is chosen through an electoral college comprising members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
