Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a start date for India’s first bullet train. The service, part of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad project, will begin operations on August 15, 2027. This marks a massive leap in railway modernization efforts. The high-speed corridor promises significantly reduced travel time and advanced infrastructure.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Timeline
The work on the ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project is moving quickly. The central government has finally provided a timeline that everyone was waiting for. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the big news on Thursday. He confirmed that the nation’s first bullet train will start running on August 15, 2027. This date is a huge achievement for India’s railway journey.
Many citizens have eagerly asked when the first bullet train would start. This under-construction high-speed rail project will greatly cut travel time. It connects Mumbai in Maharashtra and Ahmedabad in Gujarat. It also brings world-class rail standards to India.
Introducing the New Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
In another major development, Minister Vaishnaw introduced the first Vande Bharat sleeper train. This new train will soon begin service on the Guwahati–Kolkata route. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the train shortly, the minister confirmed.
Vaishnaw mentioned that the Vande Bharat sleeper train is fully tested and certified. He stressed its importance for overnight travel. This new service will provide world-class facilities and enhanced safety. Passengers on long-distance night journeys will get a modern travel experience.
“The complete testing and certification of the Vande Bharat sleeper train has been completed. Its first route is proposed to be Guwahati–Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first Vande Bharat sleeper train on this route in the coming days. This achievement is a major milestone,” Vaishnaw stated.
On December 30, 2025, the Minister posted a video on social media platform X. The clip showed the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train during high-speed trials. The video quickly demonstrated the train’s stability. Its speed increased from 178 kmph to 180 kmph in just seconds.
A New Era for Long-Distance Travel
The Railway Ministry’s year-end review suggests the Vande Bharat sleeper trains will revolutionize long-distance rail travel. These trains will initially run on busy routes. They will then expand across the entire railway network, reducing journey times significantly.
BEML Limited manufactures the Vande Bharat sleeper trains. They use technology developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). Each train set has 16 coaches. These include AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier coaches. The total passenger capacity is 1,128 people. With a top speed of 180 kmph, it is one of the nation’s fastest overnight trains.
Currently, Indian Railways operates Vande Bharat semi-high-speed trains. Their design speed is 180 kmph. The maximum operational speed is 160 kmph. The sleeper version aims to merge Rajdhani Express comfort with modern technology. It offers a new, advanced standard for overnight rail travel in India.
