Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday voiced sorrow over the devastating earthquake in Afghanistan that claimed many lives. He assured that India is ready to extend all necessary humanitarian assistance and relief to the victims.

According to a Taliban government spokesperson, the powerful quake in eastern Afghanistan has so far left over 800 people dead, injured around 2,500, and wiped out several villages.

The tremor, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, struck late Sunday across towns in Kunar province, close to Jalalabad in neighbouring Nangarhar province.

Posting on X, Modi wrote, “Deeply pained by the tragic loss of lives in the Afghanistan earthquake. Our condolences go to the bereaved families, and we wish the injured a swift recovery. India remains committed to offering every possible humanitarian aid and relief to those impacted.”
