The BRICS TimesUS President Trump recently asserted India would stop buying oil from Russia. The Ministry of External Affairs’ (MEA) reaction has now followed shortly after this statement.
The US President Donald Trump claimed that India would no longer purchase oil from Russia. He also stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given him this assurance. Following this claim, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a response. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Thursday (October 16) that India imports oil or gas considering the welfare of its citizens. He did not directly contradict Trump’s specific assertions, however.
Focusing on Indian Consumer Interests
Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted that India is a major oil and gas importer. Protecting the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy environment remains their primary focus. The country’s import policies are based entirely on this priority. Two main goals of their energy policy are ensuring stable energy prices and securing a reliable supply. As part of this strategy, India is diversifying its energy sources. They are also making market-driven adjustments.
Energy Dialogue with the US is Ongoing
Regarding the United States, the MEA confirmed they have worked to increase their energy purchases for years. This process has continuously progressed over the past decade. The current US administration has shown interest in strengthening energy cooperation with India. Discussions on this matter are actively taking place.
Trump’s Prior Assertions about India
Trump had previously shown significant concern regarding India’s purchase of oil from Russia. Due to this concern, he had even imposed a 50 percent tariff on India. However, Trump made a surprising claim on Wednesday. Speaking with reporters at the White House, he asserted that PM Modi had guaranteed him India would stop buying oil from Russia. Nevertheless, India has repeatedly clarified that it will continue procuring oil from Russia to serve its people’s interests.
