Tensions existed between India and the United States. US President Donald Trump did not want India to purchase oil from Russia. However, he now made a surprising statement. Trump asserted on Wednesday (October 15) that India won’t buy Russian oil anymore. The truth of this claim awaits the Foreign Ministry’s response. Significantly, Trump has made several unverified claims about India previously.

Trump’s Assurance Regarding India

Trump spoke with journalists at the White House. He stated, “Yes, absolutely. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is my friend. We share very good relations.” He added, “I did not like India purchasing oil from Russia. However, today he assured me that India will no longer buy Russian oil. This is a major step.” Trump also commented, “We must also get China to agree to do the same.”

US President’s Previous Russia Claim

Trump had repeatedly commented on Russian oil. He had claimed Russia uses its earnings for the Ukraine war. Hence, he didn’t want India buying Russian oil. Trump had imposed a 50 percent tariff on India due to this displeasure. The US President also levied heavy tariffs on China alongside India. Currently, a tariff war is ongoing between America and China.

Trump Praised PM Modi and India

Recently, Trump offered high praise for India. He declared India a great nation. Furthermore, he even complimented PM Modi in front of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
