As temperatures in Vidarbha continue to cross 45°C, a community group in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district has been quietly running a unique bird conservation initiative for over 25 years. Using dried bottle gourds to create natural water containers, the project is helping birds survive extreme summer heat while promoting environmental sustainability.

A Unique Bird Conservation Effort Thrives in Khamgaon
With temperatures soaring beyond 45°C across Vidarbha, a remarkable bird conservation initiative from Khamgaon in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district is drawing attention across the state. For the past two and a half decades, the Sadguru Sant Eknath Maharaj Bhajani Mandal has been carrying out a dedicated effort to provide relief to birds during the scorching summer months.
The group has adopted an environmentally friendly approach by using dried bottle gourds to create natural water containers for birds. This innovative method avoids the use of plastic and cement while supporting sustainable conservation practices. The initiative has become widely known as the “Khamgaon Pattern.”
Natural Gourds Turn Into Lifesaving Water Sources
The project is led by the Bhajani Mandal’s president, Devidas Sharma. Volunteers remove the inner pulp from fully dried gourds and attach ropes to transform them into hanging water containers. These natural vessels function much like traditional earthen pots and keep water cool throughout the day.
Each gourd container remains usable for four to five years before naturally decomposing into the soil. This makes the model both environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
Community Participation Strengthens the Initiative
This year, the organization has set a target of installing 350 water containers across Khamgaon. Volunteers place the gourds at safe heights under the shade of trees to ensure easy access for birds.
Members of the group, along with schoolchildren, refill the containers with clean water every two days. Their collective effort has helped sustain the initiative and expand its reach throughout the city.
Thermal Study Highlights the Benefits
According to thermal camera observations, water stored in plastic containers can reach temperatures of up to 41°C. In comparison, water inside the gourd containers remains around 27°C.
During severe heatwave conditions, these naturally cooled water bowls act like a “desi air conditioner” for birds, offering much-needed relief and improving their chances of survival.
A 25-Year Journey Rooted in Compassion
The initiative began in 2001 after members witnessed a bird struggling from dehydration during the summer. Moved by the sight, they decided to create a long-term solution for thirsty birds.
Since then, the project has continued uninterrupted for 25 years without seeking government assistance or publicity. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers ensured that birds continued to receive access to clean drinking water.
A Model for Sustainable Environmental Protection
The Khamgaon Pattern promotes cleanliness, environmental conservation, and compassion for animals. It has emerged as an inspiring example for communities looking to support wildlife through simple and sustainable actions.
Based on the principles of “Zero Waste, Zero Cost,” the initiative also complements Maharashtra’s “Majhi Vasundhara” environmental campaign, according to local authorities.
