Voting is currently underway in Maharashtra for 264 Nagar Panchayats and Municipal Councils. The main competition pits the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti coalition against the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi. Polling started in the morning. Election results will be announced on December 21. These elections are considered very important for the state’s political equations. They will test the strength of the major alliances. The outcomes are expected to directly influence the political direction leading up to 2025.

Tension Between BJP and Shiv Sena Allies

The Maharashtra civic polls have become more interesting due to political friction. Open tension has surfaced between the allies, the BJP and Shiv Sena. This strain was most visible in the Kankavli election in Sindhudurg over the past two weeks. Shiv Sena MLA Nilesh Rane is contesting against his own younger brother, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane.

The dispute escalated on November 27. Nilesh Rane entered a BJP worker’s house. He called the police to seize cash found there. He alleged the money was meant for distribution to voters. A sharp argument followed between the two brothers. The conflict continued until the very last day of the campaign.

New Controversy in Solapur, Questions on Raid Timing

Another controversy arose on Monday in Sangola, Solapur. The Election Commission team raided the house of Shiv Sena leader and former MLA Shahaji Patil. They also raided the premises of some other local Shiv Sena leaders. Shiv Sena strongly questioned the timing of this action. They alleged the raid was a “political reprisal.” This was supposedly in response to charges Patil made against Solapur Guardian Minister and BJP leader Jaykumar Gore during a rally.

20 Elections Postponed, Nomination Process Under Scrutiny

Meanwhile, the State Election Commission (SEC) has postponed elections in at least 20 Municipal Corporations across several Maharashtra districts. The SEC cited major irregularities in the nomination paper appeal process. It stated that major discrepancies were found during the scrutiny of nomination rejections. Consequently, the elections originally scheduled for December 2 in these areas will now be held on December 20.

Areas where elections were postponed include Baramati and Talegaon in Pune. Others are Devlali, Kopargaon, Newasa, and Pathardi in Ahilyanagar. Phaltan and Mahabaleshwar in Satara are also included. Further postponements are in Digras, Pandharkawada, and Wani in Yavatmal. Ghugus, Gadchandur, and Mul in Chandrapur are on the list. Balapur in Akola and Anjangaon-Surji in Amravati are delayed. The remaining are Dharashiv in Dharashiv district, Mangalwedha in Solapur, Badlapur in Thane, and Mukhed and Dharmabad in Nanded. These postponements will cause major shifts in election calculations. Campaign strategies will also need big changes. All parties are busy trying to ensure a strong presence before the results.
