Security forces seized AK-56 rifles, grenades, and ammunition as police revealed the duo allegedly planned an indiscriminate strike on civilians in Tinsukia town.

A Close Call For Tinsukia
Assam Police averted what could have been a deadly terror attack arresting two active cadres of the banned ULFA (Independent) outfit in the Tinsukia district on Friday. The operation was carried out on the strength of specific intelligence inputs, backed by central security agencies.
The Arrested Men
The two suspects nabbed in the operation are Siyor Asom, also known as Humenjyoti Baruah, aged 27, and Manoj Asom, also known as Papu Moran, aged 30. Police say both men held the rank of “SS 2nd Lieutenant” inside the insurgent group’s chain of command.
A Deadly Arsenal Recovered
What security forces recovered from the duo paints a chilling picture. The cache included two AK-56 assault rifles, 172 live rounds, and two hand grenades. Officers also found medical supplies, syringes, opioid substances, jungle survival rations, backpacks, and other military-style gear.
What They Were Allegedly Planning
Early interrogation suggests the two men had been assigned to carry out an indiscriminate attack on civilians in Tinsukia town. The goal, police say, was to spread widespread fear and panic across the public a signature tactic of insurgent outfits seeking to destabilise the region.
Possible Foreign Hand Suspected
Investigators now suspect the planned operation may have had outside influence with external elements allegedly trying to disturb peace and security in Assam. The exact nature and extent of this foreign link is currently under examination.
Probe Underway To Uncover Bigger Network
A formal case has since been registered and legal proceedings have begun. Police are digging deeper trying to map the wider conspiracy, trace any logistical support provided, and identify other operatives who may be part of the network.
Authorities Hail It As A Major Counter-Terror Win
Security officials describe this operation as a significant counter-insurgency success. Had the attack gone ahead, it could have resulted in mass casualties in Upper Assam making this arrest a critical intervention at the right time.
