BJP’s Bengal CM Puzzle Suvendu Adhikari, Samik Bhattacharya & Agnimitra Paul Lead a Crowded Race

With BJP crossing 180+ seats in West Bengal’s 2026 Assembly elections, all eyes now turn to one burning question who gets the Chief Minister’s chair? From seasoned organisers to firebrand politicians, several big names are firmly in the mix as the party’s high command stays tight-lipped.

As West Bengal’s 2026 Assembly election results roll in with the BJP surging past 180 seats the political spotlight has quickly moved to a fresh question. The party needs 147 seats to form the government, and it looks well on course. But here’s the thing no name has been officially announced for the top post.

The BJP’s high command has, true to form, kept its cards close to its chest. The final call on the Chief Minister’s name will come only after full results and central-level consultations. Until then, the race is wide open.

Suvendu Adhikari: The Frontrunner Everyone’s Watching

The name that keeps coming up first is Suvendu Adhikari. He is currently the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal. A former Trinamool Congress heavyweight, he switched to the BJP in 2020 and hasn’t looked back since. He served in the Mamata-led government between 2016 and 2020, giving him solid administrative experience. He’s contesting from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur directly taking on Mamata Banerjee in high-stakes battles. His deep grassroots network and strong organisational grip make him the name most insiders keep returning to.

Samik Bhattacharya: The Consensus Builder

Another name doing the rounds is Samik Bhattacharya the BJP’s current West Bengal state president. He took charge of the role in July 2025 and has been a Rajya Sabha member since 2024. With firm roots in the RSS and years of ideological work behind him, he is widely seen as someone who can stitch together different factions within the party. Party insiders describe him as a “consensus-builder” the kind of leader who doesn’t divide but unites. He was also a former MLA from Basirhat Dakshin.

Agnimitra Paul: The Rising Woman Face

Agnimitra Paul brings a different energy to the contest. A fashion designer turned politician, she is an MLA from Asansol Dakshin and has served as president of the BJP Mahila Morcha. She also held the post of general secretary of the party’s West Bengal unit. Paul has built a firm support base in the industrial belt — championing issues like employment, urban development, and the coal sector. Her visibility on the ground and in media makes her one of the most recognisable faces of the current state unit.

Dilip Ghosh: The Grassroots Veteran

Dilip Ghosh may no longer be state president, but his influence runs deep. He is the man credited with transforming the BJP’s fortunes in West Bengal turning it from a fringe player to a formidable force during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2021 Assembly polls. He served as national vice president of the BJP from 2021 to 2023 and remains an MP from Medinipur. Contesting from Kharagpur Sadar where he’s leading by over 14,000 votes Ghosh continues to command respect among the party’s ground-level workers.

Sukanta Majumdar: The Young Central Pick

Sukanta Majumdar represents the BJP’s newer, younger leadership. A former Lok Sabha MP from Balurghat, he served as West Bengal BJP president from September 2021 to July 2025. His close alignment with the BJP’s central leadership in Delhi is considered a major advantage. In a party that often surprises with its Chief Minister picks, Majumdar’s proximity to the top brass could well count in his favour.

Nisith Pramanik: The North Bengal Strongman

Nisith Pramanik is the BJP’s key face in North Bengal. A former Union Minister of State for Home Affairs and Youth Affairs serving from 2021 to 2024 he has done significant work in building the party’s network around Cooch Behar. He is contesting from Mathabhanga, where he is currently leading by a massive margin of over 28,000 votes against the TMC’s Sablu Barman. His regional clout and central government experience add weight to his candidacy.

Roopa Ganguly actress, politician, and a familiar face to millions who grew up watching Mahabharat is also being talked about. Best known for playing Draupadi in the iconic television series, she later became a Rajya Sabha MP and has been associated with the BJP for over a decade. She previously served as president of the BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal between 2015 and 2017. Contesting from Sonarpur Dakshin, she is currently leading by over 17,000 votes against the TMC’s Arundhati Maitra. Her strong appeal among urban voters makes her a credible outside option.

The BJP’s Wildcard Habit

Here’s what makes this race genuinely unpredictable the BJP has a well-documented habit of going left when everyone expects it to go right. Mohan Yadav in Madhya Pradesh, Nayab Singh Saini in Haryana, Mohan Charan Majhi in Odisha none were the consensus frontrunner before they got the call. West Bengal could easily follow that same playbook. The party’s central leadership may yet spring a surprise that catches even the most seasoned political watchers off guard.

For now, the suspense holds. West Bengal is watching and waiting.
