A Rare Blue Moon Is Coming; Here’s Exactly When to Watch It

May 2026 brings a celestial treat two full moons in a single month. The second one, on May 31, earns the legendary “Blue Moon” title. Astronomers confirm this won’t happen again until December 2028.

Two Full Moons Will Light Up the Sky This May

May 2026 is shaping up to be a special month for sky-watchers. The month will host two full moons a rare astronomical event that captures public imagination every time it occurs. The first full moon rises on May 2. The second known as a Blue Moon arrives on May 31.

What Exactly Is a Blue Moon?

The term “Blue Moon” does not mean the moon turns blue. It comes from the old English saying “once in a blue moon” meaning something exceptionally rare. When two full moons fall within a single calendar month, the second one earns this poetic nickname.

This happens because full moons occur roughly every 29.5 days. That cycle is slightly shorter than most calendar months. So occasionally, the timing lines up and one month ends up with two full moons.

When Did This Last Happen?

The last Blue Moon occurred in August 2023. The next one after May 2026 will not come until December 2028. That particular Blue Moon will be even more memorable it falls on December 31, meaning skywatchers will ring in the New Year under a glowing Blue Moon.

Astronomers from a leading space research institution noted the special coincidence. “The Blue Moon the second full moon of the month will rise on December 31, lining up perfectly with New Year’s Eve,” their statement read.

Mark Your Calendar for May 31

For anyone who enjoys watching the night sky, May 31 offers a perfect opportunity. No special equipment is needed just a clear sky and a good vantage point. The moon will appear full and bright, just as it does during any regular full moon. The “blue” part remains purely in its rarity, not its color.

So step outside on the evening of May 31 and look up. The next chance to see a Blue Moon won’t come for another two and a half years.
