A Sky Visitor Shook New England

People across Massachusetts got a shock on Saturday a deep, rattling boom rolled through the entire state. It wasn’t an explosion or an earthquake. It was a space rock screaming into Earth’s atmosphere at high speed.

The American Meteor Society confirmed the dramatic event. The boom heard around 2:30 PM local time that is 00:00 IST came from a meteor about three feet, or roughly 0.9 metres, in diameter. It entered the atmosphere near the border of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, just north of Boston.

Experts Say It Likely Burned Up

Robert Lunsford head of the association’s fireball observation program weighed in quickly. He said the meteor most likely burned up completely in the atmosphere. There is also a chance it fell into the ocean, but it almost certainly never hit solid ground.

So while the sound rattled windows and nerves, there was no danger to people on the ground. The meteor was small enough that the atmosphere did its job acting as Earth’s natural shield.

What Is the American Meteor Society?

The American Meteor Society is a non-profit scientific organization. It has been tracking meteors, fireballs, and related phenomena since 1911. Both professional astronomers and dedicated amateurs support its work, making it a trusted voice whenever something blazes through the sky over North America.

Events like this one a loud atmospheric entry with no confirmed ground impact happen more often than most people realize. Most go unnoticed because they occur over open ocean or uninhabited land. This time, one chose to announce itself rather dramatically over one of America’s most densely populated regions.
