The head of NASA’s lunar base program says the agency must tackle lighting, extreme temperatures, and terrain challenges long before astronauts ever set foot at the Moon’s South Pole.

NASA Sets an Ambitious Pace But the Clock Is Ticking
Building a base on the Moon is no small feat and NASA knows it. Carlos García-Galán, the head of NASA’s lunar base program, openly admitted that the agency faces serious challenges ones it must start solving right now, not later.
“There are challenges at different levels of complexity. The most immediate and pressing task for us right now is achieving the operational tempo we have set one that lets us actually deliver on our plans,” García-Galán said.
The numbers alone tell a demanding story. NASA currently plans around four lunar missions this year. That figure jumps to roughly ten next year and then to twelve the year after. To keep up, the agency must push its manufacturing capabilities to the limit building vast numbers of landers and other assets while testing each one rigorously.

Darkness, Cold, and Difficult Terrain Await at the South Pole
The South Pole is NASA’s chosen destination and it comes with a punishing set of conditions. The Sun sits extremely low on the horizon there, casting long, deep shadows across the surface. Lunar nights stretch on for an extraordinarily long time far longer than anything humans experience on Earth.
“When we get to the Moon, there will be many challenges starting, for example, with lighting, since we want to go to the South Pole. The Sun is very low on the horizon there, which creates many deep shadows, and the nights last very long,” García-Galán explained.
Thermal conditions add another layer of difficulty. The temperature swings wildly depending on whether equipment sits in open sunlight, deep shadow, or inside a permanently shadowed region. NASA must design systems tough enough to survive all three extremes a genuinely complex engineering problem with no easy shortcuts.

Moving Around the Moon Is Harder Than It Looks
Even getting from point A to point B poses serious obstacles. Flat, safe landing zones often sit far from the scientifically interesting sites the agency most wants to explore. That disconnect makes mobility a key challenge one the agency must plan around carefully before missions begin.
“We want to be mobile there which is also very difficult. Often, the flat areas suitable for landing are poorly connected to the regions that are of scientific interest to us. Overall, there are many challenges ahead but it is also very exciting,” García-Galán concluded.

A Three-Phase Plan to Build Humanity’s First Lunar Outpost
NASA announced in March that it would pursue a phased, permanent lunar presence. The plan unfolds in three distinct stages. First transport, basic energy systems, scientific equipment, and communications infrastructure reach the Moon. Second a more Earth-like habitable setup takes shape, incorporating contributions from international space partners. Third and finally the base supports long-duration human stays on the lunar surface.
The mission is massive, the timeline is tight, and the obstacles are real but NASA says the challenge is exactly what makes it exciting.
