WhatsApp users can no longer utilize third-party AI chatbots. Meta announced this new decision. Only the Meta AI assistant will be usable on WhatsApp. All other third-party AI chatbots will face a complete ban. This move significantly impacts companies like OpenAI and Perplexity. These firms are major rivals to Meta in the competitive AI race. Consequently, users will now only have access to Meta’s own AI chatbot on the platform.

When Will The New Rule Apply?

Meta’s new directive will be implemented from January 15 next year. This means popular chatbots like ChatGPT and Perplexity AI cannot operate on WhatsApp after this date. Meta has updated its WhatsApp Business API for this purpose. The updated policy states a company cannot use WhatsApp Business Solution if its main service is offering a chatbot.

Impact on Businesses Explained

Meta has clarified that this decision will not affect travel companies or e-commerce brands. Businesses using automated customer service bots and other limited methods are safe. The ruling directly impacts AI startups providing chat-based assistance to customers via WhatsApp. Meta states this trend is stressing its infrastructure and support systems considerably.

Meta To Set Message Limits

WhatsApp is also taking a new measure to curb spam messages. A monthly limit may be set on messages sent to non-responding users. This message restriction will apply to both businesses and regular users. The trial will commence in several countries within the coming weeks.
