Cargo Ship Hit Near Hormuz Strait, Crew Among the Injured

A French-owned cargo ship faced a missile strike in the Middle East on Tuesday night. The vessel CGM San Antonio was traveling near the Strait of Hormuz when the attack took place. Several Filipino crew members suffered injuries as a result of the strike.

What We Know About the Strike

Earlier on Tuesday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations known as UKMTO flagged a projectile impact on a cargo vessel inside the Strait of Hormuz. The UKMTO did not name the ship at that point. The full picture only emerged later through US officials.

“A cargo vessel in the Gulf countries area came under a possible ground-fired missile attack injuring several among the Filipino crew… The strike on CGM San Antonio, owned by a French firm, happened Tuesday evening local time,” officials stated.

Where the Ship Was Before the Attack

The CGM San Antonio was spotted near Dubai around midday. After that its exact course became harder to track. Investigators were unable to confirm where the vessel was heading when the missile hit.

Trump’s Shipping Mission and Its Pause

US President Donald Trump had announced a mission called “Operation Project Liberty” on May 3 aimed at escorting ships that were stuck or trying to exit the Strait of Hormuz. Shortly after the announcement, Trump said the escort mission faced a brief suspension. The CGM San Antonio attack happened against the backdrop of that already-complicated situation in the region.
