President Donald Trump publicly shared photos and surveillance footage of Cole Tomas Allen the 31-year-old California man who stormed a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner forcing Trump, Melania, and Vice President Vance to evacuate the event.

Trump and Melania evacuated after gunshots ring out at Washington Hilton
It was supposed to be a glamorous evening a night of dinner jackets, cocktails, and Washington charm. Instead, the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night turned into something far more alarming. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly rushed off the stage at the Washington Hilton ballroom after gunfire erupted near a security checkpoint. Vice President JD Vance was also evacuated along with top cabinet members. The incident marked the first time Trump had attended the annual event during his presidency and no one expected it to end this way.
Cole Tomas Allen identified as the man behind the chaos
Within hours, authorities named the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. Law enforcement officials confirmed his identity, and President Trump wasted no time. He took to his Truth Social platform and posted photos of Allen making it the first public images of the suspect to circulate widely. Trump also released surveillance footage showing Allen sprinting through a metal detector at full speed. The footage captured the moment security staff turned toward him guns already raised as he blew past the checkpoint and down the hallway.
Armed with multiple weapons, Allen charged a Secret Service checkpoint
Speaking to reporters at a late-night press briefing at the White House still dressed in his tuxedo Trump spelled out exactly what happened. “The man has been captured,” he told the press. He said Allen arrived at the WHCA dinner carrying multiple firearms. Allen charged directly at the magnetometer closest to the front entrance of the ballroom. He fired at a Secret Service agent stationed near the ballroom doors. That agent thankfully was wearing a bulletproof vest. “He was shot from very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job,” Trump said. The agent is expected to make a full recovery.
Trump flanked by top officials as he addressed the nation
The White House briefing room was packed that night. Journalists many still in formal attire from the dinner filled the room to hear Trump speak. Standing alongside him were FBI Director Kash Patel, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Trump said law enforcement officials were already heading to Allen’s apartment in California. The Secret Service also issued a separate update Saturday evening, confirming the situation was under control.
Dinner called off but Trump promises a do-over
Initially, Trump pushed to return to the dinner and let the evening continue. But law enforcement made the final call the event could not go on. The ballroom doors had been opened during the chaos, making the room no longer secure. “It was a little bit different of an evening than we thought,” Trump told reporters. “But we’ll do it again.” The White House Correspondents’ Association confirmed the dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days.
