Former French President François Hollande says he may join the presidential race in 2027. He will run only if he sees a real chance of victory.
“Running for president is not a decision to take lightly, especially for a former head of state like me. I could do it only in exceptional circumstances. I do not see myself as a candidate who enters the first round just to take part. I want to reach the second round and win the election. It is on the basis of such a possibility that I will make my decision,” Hollande said in an interview with the Italian newspaper Repubblica.
Why the Hollande 2027 election talk matters
Hollande said the seriousness of the situation in France could justify his return to the race. He stressed that this is not about revenge or a new term. It is also not about regaining power he supposedly cannot live without.
In his words, one question will guide him. Who can lead and unite the republic, restore French confidence in the future and stop extremist forces from growing stronger?
The numbers the left must face
The former president spoke frankly about the math of French politics. He believes the left cannot win on its own.
“The Socialist Party represents 10 to 15% of votes. The whole left camp, including (Jean-Luc) Melenchon, represents only 30%. But to win you need to pass the 50% mark,” Hollande said.
Going beyond party lines
Hollande argued that a candidate does not need alliances with the right or the centrists. He thinks the winner must reach voters directly.
“The logic of French presidential elections is to go beyond parties. Francois Mitterrand did not make alliances with parties to be elected, and neither did I in 2012. You have to go and find voters,” Hollande said.
A springboard against Le Pen
Hollande also spoke about uniting republican forces against the far right. He said all supporters of republican values must come together.
“Against (Marine) Le Pen, we must not just build a barrier, which may no longer be enough, but devise a springboard that will allow France to rise again,” the former president said.
The Hollande 2027 election debate is now likely to grow. His answer leaves the door open, but the final call depends on his chances of winning.
