Shooting breaks out during ICE operation in Marble Hill

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Thursday he would push President Donald Trump to pull federal immigration agents out of the city. His demand came after a chaotic ICE shooting shook a Bronx neighborhood. The New York Police Department said a man was shot around 4pm in Marble Hill. The shooting happened during a clash with federal agents. Mamdani and the Department of Homeland Security later confirmed ICE agents carried out the operation. DHS said officers fired into the man’s vehicle during a targeted enforcement action. The agency added that ICE officers rendered aid right after the ICE shooting occurred.

Five year old child was sitting in the back seat

Mamdani confirmed a five year old child was inside the car when agents opened fire. He said the boy, believed to be the driver’s son, escaped physical injury. “Thank God that child is physically unharmed,” Mamdani told reporters. A witness described the boy as frozen in terror during the gunfire. The wounded man, reported to be from the Dominican Republic, was rushed to NewYork Presbyterian Allen Hospital. He remained conscious and was receiving treatment there Thursday night.

Mayor calls two hour talks with Trump a failure

Mamdani said he spent two hours on the phone with Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. He tried negotiating the wounded man’s release from federal custody. “For the past two hours, I have been on the phone with President Trump and Secretary Mullin, negotiating the release of the man ICE agents shot,” Mamdani said. “Those negotiations were unsuccessful.” Federal agents later removed the man from the hospital in an unmarked vehicle, according to local reporting.

Mamdani renews call to abolish ICE

The mayor called the shooting “unconscionable and incredibly serious.” He said New Yorkers deserve safety from aggressive federal enforcement tactics. “We know that ICE is rotten to its core,” Mamdani said at a late night press conference. “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” he added. The New York Immigration Coalition said agents shot the man through his windshield near 225th Street.

Protesters gather near shooting scene

Several hundred protesters gathered peacefully near the shooting site Thursday evening. They voiced opposition to Trump’s ongoing immigration crackdown across American cities. Police pushed demonstrators back as ICE vehicles pulled away from the hospital. Governor Kathy Hochul also weighed in, noting many details remained unclear. She pointed to early reports describing agents firing into a car with a child present.

Tense backdrop between City Hall and Washington

Trump criticized Mamdani sharply before he took office this past January. The two leaders have since built a surprisingly cooperative relationship, despite sharp policy disagreements. New York remains a sanctuary city. Its police department does not assist federal immigration enforcement operations. This ICE shooting marks one of the most serious confrontations yet between City Hall and the Trump administration’s deportation campaign.
