Iran Pledges Never to Pursue Nuclear Weapons in Draft US Memorandum

A draft memorandum of understanding currently under discussion between Washington and Tehran includes a firm commitment from Iran to never develop nuclear weapons. The document also opens the door to talks on halting Iran’s uranium enrichment program and removing its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

An unnamed American official confirmed the details of the draft agreement. “The draft memorandum of understanding includes Iran’s commitments to never develop nuclear weapons and to negotiate a halt to its uranium enrichment program and the removal of its highly enriched uranium stockpile,” the official stated.

Iran Sends Oral Assurances Through Back-Channel Diplomacy

Two separate sources familiar with the ongoing negotiations added important context Iran has already passed “oral assurances” to the United States through intermediaries. These back-channel messages reportedly outline the scope of concessions Tehran is ready to make. The assurances specifically cover the suspension of enrichment activities and the disposal of nuclear material.

The use of intermediaries signals the sensitivity of the talks both sides appear cautious about making public commitments too early. Still, the existence of these oral guarantees suggests that meaningful progress is being made behind the scenes.
