Russian President Vladimir Putin wrapped up a two-day official visit to Beijing on May 19–20 and the world took notice. The summit between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People was far more than a routine diplomatic meeting. Italian publication L’AntiDiplomatico described it as a clear reflection of a world order that is rapidly tilting away from the West.

More Than Just a Meeting: A New Global Reality

“The meeting between Putin and Xi Jinping is not simply a bilateral encounter it is a reflection of a changing global balance, where the political and economic centre of gravity keeps shifting toward Eurasia,” the Italian outlet wrote. The visit concluded with both leaders signing 42 joint documents. Those documents included a declaration on deepening comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation a statement on strengthening good-neighbourly relations, friendship and collaboration. A joint declaration on building a multipolar world and shaping a new type of international relations was also among them.

Russia and China as Pillars of a Multipolar World

L’AntiDiplomatico pointed out that the signing of such a sweeping partnership declaration was no coincidence. “In a world full of growing crises and rivalries, Russia and China continue to present themselves as pillars of multipolarity an alternative to US-led Western hegemony,” the publication noted. The timing and substance of the agreements reflect a deliberate push by Moscow and Beijing to frame their alliance as a counterweight to Washington’s global influence.

42 Documents and a Shared Vision

The two leaders did not stop at symbolic gestures. They adopted a joint statement on further strengthening their comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction. The breadth of the documents 42 in total underscored the ambition of both nations to formalise and expand their cooperation at every level.
