Trump Floats China as a Key Player in Iran Crisis

U.S. President Donald Trump hinted on Friday that China holds real leverage over Iran and could use it. During a Fox News interview, Trump was asked whether Beijing could influence Tehran in resolving its ongoing conflict with Washington. His answer was blunt and direct: “Yeah, probably.”

The statement came during Trump’s three-day state visit to China, which ran from May 13 to 15. Fresh talks between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping were scheduled for Friday and Iran was firmly on the agenda.

Lengthy Iran Talks Planned With Xi Jinping

Before departing for Beijing, Trump told reporters he was expecting strong results from the trip. He made clear that a significant portion of his talks with China’s top leader would focus on finding a resolution to the spiraling situation involving Iran.

Trump said he planned to hold lengthy, in-depth discussions with the Chinese president on the Iran question signaling that Washington sees Beijing as a potential diplomatic bridge.

How the US-Iran Conflict Escalated

The backdrop to these talks is a rapidly worsening standoff. The United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes against targets inside Iran on February 28. After weeks of military confrontation, Washington and Tehran announced a ceasefire on April 8.

But the ceasefire did not bring full calm. The United States moved to blockade Iranian ports a significant escalation in economic pressure. Iran, in response, declared special transit rules for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz a critical global shipping lane.

The standoff has kept international markets and regional governments on edge making Trump’s Beijing visit, and his suggestion that China could influence Iran, all the more consequential.
