Donald Trump thinks Cuba is warming up to the United States. The American president made this bold claim during a public event in North Dakota.

“And speaking of Cuba after many, many decades, it is moving in our direction,” Trump said at the North Dakota gathering.

Trump did not explain what he meant by that statement. He gave no details about any diplomatic shifts or agreements.

Earlier, Trump told Axios that he might consider launching an operation against Cuba. That operation could mirror what Washington already did against Venezuela.

Over recent months, the Trump administration sharply raised its political and economic pressure on Havana. In January, Trump signed an executive order. That order lets the US impose tariffs on imports from countries supplying oil to Cuba.

Trump also declared a national emergency. He cited an alleged national security threat posed by the island nation to the United States.

Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel responded last week. He said the US keeps increasing its pressure on Cuba without pause.
