After a series of high-level discussions with Pentagon leaders, US President Donald Trump has chosen to pursue diplomacy rather than additional military strikes to resolve the ongoing conflict with Iran, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing American officials.

US President Donald Trump has decided to stick with diplomacy as the preferred path to resolve the conflict with Iran. The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing senior American officials.
In recent days, Trump held a series of discussions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Caine. The talks focused on whether the US should carry out additional military strikes against Iran.
“But [Trump] decided to stay with diplomatic negotiations for now,” the newspaper reported.
During those discussions, Trump expressed concern that another round of strikes could seriously damage diplomatic efforts. He warned advisers that further military action could hurt Washington’s chances of permanently dismantling Iran’s nuclear programme.
Trump also told his aides he is comfortable if nuclear deal negotiations run past the August 18 deadline. That date was set as the target for completing a final nuclear agreement, the paper noted.
On the night of June 18, Iran and the United States remotely signed a memorandum. That memorandum lays out a framework to end the military conflict that began on February 28. It also sets timelines for when the US will lift its naval blockade and when Iran will reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
