Trump Shuts the Door on Iran Negotiations
US President Donald Trump declared on Tuesday that he has no desire to negotiate with Iran at this moment. The statement came in response to a question from Fox News journalist Trey Yingst who asked whether the United States had been negotiating with the wrong people all along.
“Well, now I don’t want to negotiate,” Trump said flatly.
A Memorandum That Led Nowhere
The backdrop to this blunt declaration is a troubled diplomatic trail. Iran and the United States on the night of June 18 had remotely signed a memorandum aimed at ending the military conflict that began on February 28. Follow-up technical talks held in Switzerland subsequently collapsed without any agreement.
That diplomatic dead end now appears to have hardened Trump’s position considerably closing the door on any near-term diplomatic resolution.
US Military Strikes on Iran What Happened
Since July 8, American forces have carried out multiple rounds of strikes against Iran. The US Central Command justified the attacks as a response to Iranian actions targeting commercial vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz a critical global shipping corridor.
Iran’s military responded in kind launching retaliatory strikes against US bases across several countries in the Middle East.
The region is now gripped in a dangerous cycle of military exchanges with no ceasefire in sight and Trump ruling out any return to the negotiating table for now.
