Delegations Gather For Critical Round Of Talks
Talks between American and Iranian delegations will soon start in Bürgenstock. This was confirmed by Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday.
The ministry released an official statement on the matter. It read: “The American delegation led by US Vice President JD Vance, the Iranian delegation led by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and the mediators Pakistan and Qatar have arrived in Bürgenstock. Talks between the parties will begin during the morning.”
Negotiators Arrived Through The Night
Some delegations reached the venue late at night. Iranian negotiators landed around midnight local time.
The American delegation touched down at 7:00 am local time, which is 8:00 am Moscow time. Pakistani mediators were the last group to join the gathering.
Sunday’s meeting in Bürgenstock will bring together technical teams from Iran and the United States. Mediating nations Pakistan and Qatar will also take part. The discussions are expected to happen behind closed doors.
Memorandum Set The Stage For This Meeting
Iran and the US remotely signed a memorandum on the night of June 18. This document outlines an end to the military conflict that began on February 28. It also sets timelines for the US to lift its naval blockade. Iran, in turn, agreed to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has further committed to not acquiring nuclear weapons. The matter of Iran’s nuclear programme will be settled through a separate agreement. Both sides will hold negotiations on this issue over the next 60 days. Tehran expects this process to result in the lifting of sanctions against it.
