Strait Remains Closed, Iranian Source Confirms

The Strait of Hormuz is still closed, according to the Fars news agency. The outlet cited a source inside Iran’s armed forces for this update.

Technical-level talks between Iran and the United States open Sunday in Burgenstock, Switzerland. Mediator nations Pakistan and Qatar will also take part. Organizers expect the discussions to happen behind closed doors.

“The Strait of Hormuz remains closed the IRGC Navy is not issuing vessels permission to pass until further notice,” the agency’s report stated.

Memorandum Sets Path to End Conflict

Iran and the US remotely signed a memorandum overnight on June 18. The document aims to wind down a military conflict that began on February 28. It also lays out a timeline the US would lift its naval blockade, while Iran would restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Beyond that, Iran has committed to not acquiring nuclear weapons. A separate agreement will need to settle the broader nuclear program question. Both sides plan 60 days of talks to work that out. Tehran’s goal throughout remains the lifting of anti-Iran sanctions.
