Washington’s Key Commitment Under the Preliminary Deal
Washington, as part of a preliminary understanding with Tehran, is bound to lift oil sanctions against Iran and do so for the entire duration of the peace negotiation process. That’s what the Tasnim news agency reported on Saturday. The suspension would allow Iran to sell its oil freely on international markets something it has not been able to do under years of heavy American restrictions. According to Tasnim, the deal would also extend relief to Iran’s petrochemical sector removing sanctions from that industry as well.

Trump Says a Broader Deal Is Nearly Done
US President Donald Trump had earlier stated that a comprehensive deal with Iran is largely agreed upon. He said the final details and remaining aspects are still being worked through and a formal announcement would come soon. The statement raised expectations that a breakthrough agreement between Washington and Tehran could be close at hand.

The Road to Talks Conflict, Ceasefire, and Blockade
The backdrop to these negotiations is a sharp and deadly escalation. On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes against targets inside Iranian territory. More than three thousand people lost their lives in that military campaign. Washington and Tehran then declared a ceasefire on April 8 halting active hostilities. Subsequent talks held in Islamabad between the two sides ended without a breakthrough. No resumption of fighting has been reported since then but the United States moved to tighten pressure by imposing a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
